Challenge For
The New Year The New Year is upon us. Call it a new beginning, a new day, a new page, a blank page, an open book or whatever you choose. What you call 2007 is not as important as what you do with the future that lies ahead.
2. Enroll in a Bible Study and/or get involved in a Sunday School Class. 3. Make attendance at Sunday School and Worship a priority for your family. 4. Say no to events that conflict with regular scheduled Church services. 5. Determine your current level of giving and increase your percentage of giving to the church. 6. Reach out in friendship to someone of a different culture. 7. Join the choir. 8. Volunteer at the Hospital, Dorcas Shop, or help feed the poor and homeless. 9. Establish a family altar, read the Bible and pray with your family daily. 10. Intentionally witness for Christ every day. 11. Be an encourager to others. 12. Be the presence of Christ wherever you go. May God Bless
you in the New Year as you join Him in the work that He is doing.

As the Westwood staff, we would like
to share our heartfelt appreciation for your generosity and the countless
expressions of love and kindness that you have shown us, not only
at Christmas, but throughout the entire year. We are blessed to minister
in such a wonderful church family! |
| January 9, 7-9pm You've discovered a special place where you can find help as you grieve the loss of a family member or friend. You don't have to be alone as you make the journey through grief. Let us help you. GriefShare, a special seminar and support group for people grieving the loss of someone close. This group is sponsored by people who understand what you are experiencing and want to offer you comfort and encouragement during this difficult time. They will meet for 13 weeks from 7:00-9:00pm in Room 209. A person can start the group at any time during the 13 week period and can continue when the session starts again. Jackie Woodcock and Leland Yelvington will facilitate the group. Please contact the church office (469-9393) for more info and/or register. The GriefShare website is www.griefshare.org.

It’s hard to know how to help someone who is going through a divorce. It takes a long time and a lot of work to heal the pain that comes with the breakup of a marriage. DivorceCare is a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced. If you know someone going through a divorce, make sure he or she knows about DivorceCare. It might just be the best thing you could do to help. The DivorceCare website is: www.divorcecare.org. DivorceCare seminar meets from 5:00-6:30pm Rm 209 beginning Sunday, January 14 and runs for 13 weeks. Brochures are available in the church lobby. |

Westwood Boys Basketball Team The Westwood RA’s have started a boy’s basketball team for grades 4 – 6. The majority of the players on the team have never played organized basketball. Playing a new sport in a strange gymnasium in front of a crowd takes a lot of courage. These kids appreciate the support they are receiving from our church family. We invite you to attend an upcoming game and help cheer the boys. The schedule is on the church website (see the RA page) as well as posted on bulletin boards throughout the church. The next time you are watching a college or professional basketball game on TV, remember that the players probably started playing as youngsters. Many of them may not have heard the best message in their formative years. Westwood’s team has a primary mission. Ask any boy on the team and he will tell you the mission is to be Christ-like in every way. Perhaps if some of the guys playing on TV had heard that same message the world would be a better place.

Hurricane Katrina Mission Trip Westwood will be sending a mission team to Gulfport, Mississippi, February 10 -17 to assist with disaster recovery work on homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. This will be the fifth team that has gone from our church. The team will leave on Saturday and return the following Saturday. Travel time is a long day (15-16 hours). Our church will provide transportation (rental van). Once on the site, NC Baptist Men will provide housing and meals. Each team member will be asked to contribute $10.00 per day ($60.00) to help cover the cost of food. NC Baptist Men have committed to rebuild 600 homes over a two-year period in the Gulfport area. Over 340 houses have already been completed during the first year of reconstruction, but there is still a lot of work to do. You don’t have to have any special skills, just a commitment to help someone in need and to share Christ’s love. There is always something that every volunteer can do. Sign up sheets are posted in hallway A and B. Contact Jim Canterberry for more information about participating. |
| Senior Adult Ministry We will have a covered
dish luncheon on Thursday, January 18 at 12
Noon in the Fellowship Hall. Bring your favorite dish and join
us. |

A Thank You note has been received from Clara Godwin. Please stop by the bulletin board in Hall A to read her words of appreciation. |

New Format For Winter Bible Study
This year, our Winter Bible Study will focus on the Gospel of Matthew and we are experimenting with a different format. The new schedule will allow us to complete the entire study in one day, using an afternoon and evening session. Our leader, Dr. Roy DeBrand, will bring the morning message at the 10:30am worship hour as an introduction to Matthew’s Gospel. We will return for the first study session from 4:00pm—5:30pm with a stand –up break around 4:50pm. At 5:30pm we will enjoy a light meal and begin the second study session at 6:15pm. The evening will conclude by 7:45pm. Our youth will be engaged in their own study of Matthew with their sessions running concurrently with those of the adults. There will also be sessions for the children. We are hopeful that this new format will be more “family friendly” and allow more of our members to plan their schedules accordingly. Plan now to join us for this exciting study. |
