Winter Bible Study with Dr. Roy DeBrand
February 11th, 2007

by Charles Allard

The Gospel of Matthew is the focus of Study for our 2007 Winter Bible Study. The format time has been changed this year to hopefully involve more people in the Winter Bible Study. We begin with Dr. Roy DeBrand, Professor of Preaching at Campbell University bringing the morning message on Feb. 11th. The formal study, led by Dr. DeBrand, begins at 4:00pm with a brief break for a light meal at 5:30pm. The study will resume at 6:15pm and conclude at 7:45pm.

Special study sessions will be provided for the Youth and children during the hours of the Adult Study.

The Gospel of Matthew is devoted to showing how Jesus is the Promised Messiah. Much attention is given to the Kingdom of God. Matthew takes us from the birth of Christ through the resurrection and the Great Commission.

Dr. DeBrand is one of the most respected Professors at Campbell Divinity School. He is author of six books and has been a visiting scholar at Oxford University, England. For short periods of mission involvement he has lived in Austria, Germany and the Bahama Islands. We welcome Dr. DeBrand as our Winter Bible Study teacher.

To the Saints at Westwood
Baptist Church

Joan and I are deeply appreciative to you for your every prayer in remembering our 14 year old granddaughter, Dana Alexandra Jordan, who battled osteo-sarcoma cancer for some eighteen months so bravely and courageously. Charles Allard unfailingly called regularly to tell us of all of your concern. We thank you and Charles for your support of all of us in this difficult time. And thank you for being present at Dana's memorial service at the Wake Forest Baptist Church on January 14, and for the Peace Lily. Perhaps Charles will share with you the program for that service with Dana's picture and words about her. Again, we will always be grateful to you for your love and support.

GriefShare

Tuesdays 7-9pm

You've discovered a special place where you can find help as you grieve the loss of a family member or friend. You don't have to be alone as you make the journey through grief. Let us help you. GriefShare, a special seminar and support group for people grieving the loss of someone close. This group is sponsored by people who understand what you are experiencing and want to offer you comfort and encouragement during this difficult time. Westwood Baptist Church is offering GriefShare to it's members and anyone in our community who needs healing from the death of a loved one. They meet for 13 weeks on Tuesdays from 7:00-9:00pm in Room 209. A person can start the group at any time during the 13 week period and can continue when the session starts again. Jackie Woodcock and Leland Yelvington will facilitate the group. Please contact the church office (469-9393) for more info and/or register. The GriefShare website is www.griefshare.org.

Dr. DeBrand To Lead Winter Bible Study 2007

We are excited to announce that our Winter Bible Study for 2007 will be led by Dr. Roy DeBrand, Professor of Preaching at Campbell University Divinity School. Dr. DeBrand earned his B.A. from the University of Corpus Christi and both his M.Div. and Ph.D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Dr. DeBrand’s passion is preaching and his relaxed, personable style appeals to listeners of all ages and backgrounds. He preached his first sermon over forty-five years ago and he continues to teach his students biblical preaching. Prior to joining the faculty at Campbell in 2002, he taught preaching at North American Baptist Seminary and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and served as a pastor of churches in Texas, Georgia, and Virginia for 27 years.

He is the author of six books and numerous articles in popular and professional journals and was a weekly columnist of the Americus Times-Recorder for five years. Dr. De Brand has been a visiting scholar at Oxford University in England and has lived and served for short periods in missions in the Bahama Islands, Germany, and Austria.

Dr. De Brand is married to Carolyn and they have two children and one grandson. His hobbies include reading, traveling, and collecting bubble gum machines.

Plan now to join us on Sunday, February 11 for our Winter Bible Study in the Gospel of Matthew led by Dr. DeBrand. See below for specific details about the schedule and format of the study.

Sundays 5-630pm

It’s hard to know how to help someone who is going through a divorce. It takes a long time and a lot of work to heal the pain that comes with the breakup of a marriage.

DivorceCare is a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced. If you know someone going through a divorce, make sure he or she knows about DivorceCare. It might just be the best thing you could do to help.

The DivorceCare website is: www.divorcecare.org.

DivorceCare seminar meets from 5:00-6:30pm Rm 209 each Sunday for 13 weeks. Brochures are available in the church lobby.

Westwood Boys Basketball Team

The Westwood RA’s have started a boy’s basketball team for grades 4 – 6. The majority of the players on the team have never played organized basketball. Playing a new sport in a strange gymnasium in front of a crowd takes a lot of courage. These kids appreciate the support they are receiving from our church family. We invite you to attend an upcoming game and help cheer the boys. The schedule is on the church website (see the RA page) as well as posted on bulletin boards throughout the church. The next time you are watching a college or professional basketball game on TV, remember that the players probably started playing as youngsters. Many of them may not have heard the best message in their formative years. Westwood’s team has a primary mission. Ask any boy on the team and he will tell you the mission is to be Christ-like in every way. Perhaps if some of the guys playing on TV had heard that same message the world would be a better place.

February Boys Basketball Schedule

Feb 10 - 10am Boys Basketball at Cary FBC

Feb 16 - 630pm Boys Basketball at Trinity

Feb 17 - 9am Boys Basketball at Bayleaf

Feb 23, 24, 25 - Boys Basketball Tournament

Dental Bus

The Mission Committee will be collecting toothbrushes (adults and children), toothpaste and dental floss during the month of February. Please put these items in the box near the library in Hall B. The Dental Bus will come to Westwood on Saturday, March 17th.

Children's Ministry Committee

In order to coordinate the ministries that the church offers to the preschoolers and children of our church and community we are in the process of forming a Children’s Ministry Committee. Stay tuned for further details.

Baptist Men's Breakfast

A Baptist Men’s breakfast will be held Saturday, February 3. Richard Brunson, Director NC Baptist Men, will be our guest speaker.

Future mission projects and dates will be discussed. Also, lapel/hat pins will be presented those of you who have participated in disaster recovery work in Gulfport and other hurricane disasters in recognition of your service.

Don McLamb and his crew will prepare breakfast. Your wife and/or son(s) are invited to attend.

Hurricane Katrina Mission Trip

Westwood will be sending a mission team to Gulfport, Mississippi, February 10 -17 to assist with disaster recovery work on homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. This will be the fifth team that has gone from our church.

The team will leave on Saturday and return the following Saturday. Travel time is a long day (15-16 hours). Our church will provide transportation (rental van). Once on the site, NC Baptist Men will provide housing and meals. Each team member will be asked to contribute $10.00 per day ($60.00) to help cover the cost of food.

NC Baptist Men have committed to rebuild 600 homes over a two-year period in the Gulfport area. Over 340 houses have already been completed during the first year of reconstruction, but there is still a lot of work to do. You don’t have to have any special skills, just a commitment to help someone in need and to share Christ’s love. There is always something that every volunteer can do. Sign up sheets are posted in hallway A and B. Contact Jim Canterberry for more information about participating.

Mountains of hats (many beautifully hand knitted), piles of socks, more crayons than you could count, candy, toothbrushes by the dozen, enough ink pens and pencils to build a small fort, and the list goes on…. These are just a few of the items in the Christmas boxes sent to the Roma children by the folks of Westwood Baptist Church.

New Format For Winter Bible Study

This year, our Winter Bible Study will focus on the Gospel of Matthew and we are experimenting with a different format. The new schedule will allow us to complete the entire study in one day, using an afternoon and evening session. Our leader, Dr. Roy DeBrand, will bring the morning message at the 10:30am worship hour as an introduction to Matthew’s Gospel. We will return for the first study session from 4:00pm—5:30pm with a stand –up break around 4:50pm. At 5:30pm we will enjoy a light meal and begin the second study session at 6:15pm. The evening will conclude by 7:45pm.

Our youth will be engaged in their own study of Matthew with their sessions running concurrently with those of the adults. There will also be sessions for the children. We are hopeful that this new format will be more “family friendly” and allow more of our members to plan their schedules accordingly. Plan now to join us for this exciting study.

A Thank You note has been received from Sasha Vedock, Al & Tullie Johnson and Jerrall & Wyvette Spencer. Please stop by the bulletin board in Hall A to read their words of appreciation.

The Master’s Men
Sunday, March 4th at 10:20AM

The Master's Men is a male a cappella ensemble dedicated to providing inspirational music to the glory of God. Our goal is to spread the message of God's love in song, in ways that will enhance Christian church worship services and other programs. Arrangements include hymns, spirituals, gospel, and other musical styles in four, five, and six part harmony for unaccompanied male voices. All of our members have considerable experience singing in quartets and/or choruses and choirs. The group was originally founded by the late Mr. Rudy Partin, who was a skilled and experienced director and arranger. Currently, The Master's Men are blessed to be directed by Mr. Robert Cox, a talented choral director and Christian Music Minister, and by Mr. Larry Triplett, one of the group's founding members and also a gifted choral director and arranger.
