Winter Bible
Study with Dr. Roy DeBrand The Gospel of Matthew is the focus of Study for our 2007 Winter Bible Study. The format time has been changed this year to hopefully involve more people in the Winter Bible Study. We begin with Dr. Roy DeBrand, Professor of Preaching at Campbell University bringing the morning message on Feb. 11th. The formal study, led by Dr. DeBrand, begins at 4:00pm with a brief break for a light meal at 5:30pm. The study will resume at 6:15pm and conclude at 7:45pm. Special study sessions will be provided for the Youth and children during the hours of the Adult Study. The Gospel of Matthew is devoted to showing how Jesus is the Promised Messiah. Much attention is given to the Kingdom of God. Matthew takes us from the birth of Christ through the resurrection and the Great Commission.
Dr. DeBrand is one of the most respected Professors at Campbell Divinity School. He is author of six books and has been a visiting scholar at Oxford University, England. For short periods of mission involvement he has lived in Austria, Germany and the Bahama Islands. We welcome Dr. DeBrand as our Winter Bible Study teacher.

To the Saints
at Westwood Joan and I are deeply appreciative to you for your every prayer in remembering our 14 year old granddaughter, Dana Alexandra Jordan, who battled osteo-sarcoma cancer for some eighteen months so bravely and courageously. Charles Allard unfailingly called regularly to tell us of all of your concern. We thank you and Charles for your support of all of us in this difficult time. And thank you for being present at Dana's memorial service at the Wake Forest Baptist Church on January 14, and for the Peace Lily. Perhaps Charles will share with you the program for that service with Dana's picture and words about her. Again, we will always be grateful to you for your love and support. George

Westwood Boys Basketball Team The Westwood RA’s have started a boy’s basketball team for grades 4 – 6. The majority of the players on the team have never played organized basketball. Playing a new sport in a strange gymnasium in front of a crowd takes a lot of courage. These kids appreciate the support they are receiving from our church family. We invite you to attend an upcoming game and help cheer the boys. The schedule is on the church website (see the RA page) as well as posted on bulletin boards throughout the church. The next time you are watching a college or professional basketball game on TV, remember that the players probably started playing as youngsters. Many of them may not have heard the best message in their formative years. Westwood’s team has a primary mission. Ask any boy on the team and he will tell you the mission is to be Christ-like in every way. Perhaps if some of the guys playing on TV had heard that same message the world would be a better place.

| Hurricane Katrina Mission Trip Westwood will be sending a mission team to Gulfport, Mississippi, February 10 -17 to assist with disaster recovery work on homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. This will be the fifth team that has gone from our church. The team will leave on Saturday and return the following Saturday. Travel time is a long day (15-16 hours). Our church will provide transportation (rental van). Once on the site, NC Baptist Men will provide housing and meals. Each team member will be asked to contribute $10.00 per day ($60.00) to help cover the cost of food. NC Baptist Men have committed to rebuild 600 homes over a two-year period in the Gulfport area. Over 340 houses have already been completed during the first year of reconstruction, but there is still a lot of work to do. You don’t have to have any special skills, just a commitment to help someone in need and to share Christ’s love. There is always something that every volunteer can do. Sign up sheets are posted in hallway A and B. Contact Jim Canterberry for more information about participating. |

Mountains of hats (many beautifully hand knitted), piles of socks, more crayons than you could count, candy, toothbrushes by the dozen, enough ink pens and pencils to build a small fort, and the list goes on…. These are just a few of the items in the Christmas boxes sent to the Roma children by the folks of Westwood Baptist Church. Ralph and Tammy Stocks |
| New Format For Winter Bible Study
This year, our Winter Bible Study will focus on the Gospel of Matthew and we are experimenting with a different format. The new schedule will allow us to complete the entire study in one day, using an afternoon and evening session. Our leader, Dr. Roy DeBrand, will bring the morning message at the 10:30am worship hour as an introduction to Matthew’s Gospel. We will return for the first study session from 4:00pm—5:30pm with a stand –up break around 4:50pm. At 5:30pm we will enjoy a light meal and begin the second study session at 6:15pm. The evening will conclude by 7:45pm. Our youth will be engaged in their own study of Matthew with their sessions running concurrently with those of the adults. There will also be sessions for the children. We are hopeful that this new format will be more “family friendly” and allow more of our members to plan their schedules accordingly. Plan now to join us for this exciting study. |
