What Every Christian Needs

by Charles Allard

I love it when the Lord wakes me up during the night and fills my mind with a message. When that happens, I have found that the best thing I can do is get out of bed, find a piece of paper and write down the thoughts as they come to me.

One of the messages that I received in the middle of the night focused on what every Christian needs. Every Christian needs peace in his heart, boldness in the Word, wisdom in the work and purpose in the Kingdom.

Peace in our heart comes from God who is the source of our peace. Jesus said, “My peace I give to you.” It is the peace that passes all understanding. It is the peace that holds us together when the storms around us are raging. It is the peace that enables us to face the most difficult circumstances. It is the peace that despite our troubles enables us to sleep at night.
Boldness in the Word means that we are not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and we are not embarrassed to be called Christian. Boldness also means that we make no apology for sharing the Good News of Christ with others. Boldness means that we are grateful when others take note that we have been with Jesus.

Wisdom in the work is what we all need. James 1:5 says, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” In James 3:17 we read, “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.” If apart from Christ we can do nothing, how much more do we need his wisdom to do his work?

Purpose in the Kingdom is essential if we are to have meaning and fulfillment in our lives. I am convinced that God has a purpose and plan for every life. When we discover God’s plan for our lives and submit to it, we know joy beyond measure. Joining God in His work is not a chore, it is a blessing.

GriefShare

Tuesdays 7-9pm

You've discovered a special place where you can find help as you grieve the loss of a family member or friend. You don't have to be alone as you make the journey through grief. Let us help you. GriefShare, a special seminar and support group for people grieving the loss of someone close. This group is sponsored by people who understand what you are experiencing and want to offer you comfort and encouragement during this difficult time. Westwood Baptist Church is offering GriefShare to it's members and anyone in our community who needs healing from the death of a loved one. They meet for 13 weeks on Tuesdays from 7:00-9:00pm in Room 209. A person can start the group at any time during the 13 week period and can continue when the session starts again. Jackie Woodcock and Leland Yelvington will facilitate the group. Please contact the church office (469-9393) for more info and/or register. The GriefShare website is www.griefshare.org.

Pinewood Derby and Mission Fair

No, the sawing noises you may have heard downstairs on recent Wednesday nights is not a group of carpenters remodeling the church. And no, the hammering you may have heard downstairs has nothing to do with remodeling either. The noise is coming from all the Westwood RA’s and GA’s preparing for their upcoming Pinewood Derby. The annual race, along with the associated Mission Fair, will be held Friday, March 23rd in the fellowship hall. Along with 2 race groups for both the RA’s and GA’s, there will be another race open to anyone in the church. Seniors, adults and youth are all invited and encouraged to join the fun. Car kits are only $3 and can be purchased from any of the RA or GA leaders. Please check your upcoming Sunday bulletins for additional details regarding this event.

Sundays 5-630pm

It’s hard to know how to help someone who is going through a divorce. It takes a long time and a lot of work to heal the pain that comes with the breakup of a marriage.

DivorceCare is a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced. If you know someone going through a divorce, make sure he or she knows about DivorceCare. It might just be the best thing you could do to help.

The DivorceCare website is: www.divorcecare.org.

DivorceCare seminar meets from 5:00-6:30pm Rm 209 each Sunday for 13 weeks. Brochures are available in the church lobby.

Gulfport, Mississippi

The fifth mission team from Westwood Baptist went to Gulfport, Mississippi, February 10-17 to help with recovery work from the disaster caused by Hurricane Katrina. The team consisted of Tim Bolden, Jim Canterberry, Norm Dion, Charlie and Betty Johnson, Tim Kennedy, Peggy Percy, and Horace Robertson.

Our assignment was changed when we arrived in Gulfport, and we worked on a house owned by Jim Rich. We roofed, wired, removed the damaged flooring and installed sub flooring in the house. The team really enjoyed getting to know Mr. Rich.

One of the highlights of the trip was on Sunday afternoon when we had an opportunity to visit three families that Westwood teams had assisted in earlier trips. All of these families are now back in their homes and really appreciate what NC Baptist Men have done to help them. One of the homeowners that we visited was Alma Hayes. When we arrived in Gulfport in October 2005, Westwood was assigned to work on Alma’s house. Alma had not been in her house since it was flooded from the Hurricane. Therefore, it was an emotional time for her as we carried all of her belongings – furniture, clothes, pictures, etc and piled them at the curb on her street. When we went by Sunday afternoon, she was at home and had just moved back into her house on Saturday. It was unusual that we were the first to be in the house after the flood and the first to be there after she moved back in. We gave her a basket of items that Hailey Hutto had sent with us. In the basket was a picture frame and Alma said, “Oh, this will be for my first photo, maybe the one that I salvaged of my mother.”

NC Baptist Men have committed to rebuild 700 homes over a two year period in Gulfport. Over 450 houses have already been completed and NC Baptists have had many opportunities to share Christ’s love.

Dental Bus

The Dental Bus will come to Westwood on Saturday, March 17th 830am-430pm. If you know of someone that doesn't have dental care, invite them to come.

Children's Ministry Committee

In order to coordinate the ministries that the church offers to the preschoolers and children of our church and community we are in the process of forming a Children’s Ministry Committee. Stay tuned for further details.

Dr. George Braswell Returns March 14

With all the events that have transpired in Iraq and the Middle East over the last year, you will want to be present on Wednesday night, March 14, when Dr. George Braswell returns to share his perspective on World Events and to answer questions that we might have about the crisis in our world today.
Dr. Braswell will fellowship with us at the evening meal and speak at the 6:30 prayer service. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us for this significant up-date.

Evening Mission Group

This is an invitation to all the ladies of the church to attend the Evening Mission Group. We are a small group and we meet for prayer, to study missions and for fellowship. If you are new to the church or have been a member for several years, it would be a great way to make new Christian friends. We meet in our homes every fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00pm. Check the church newsletter each month to see where our next meeting will be held. This month we will meet on March 22, 7:00pm at Sherry Stone’s home. We look forward to seeing you!

A Thank You note has been received from Ellis Williams, the family of Jo Steinbeck, Betty, Becky & Margaret Rees, Robert L. Cooper , Denise Koogler and Mildred Sanderford. Please stop by the bulletin board in Hall A to read their words of appreciation.

Media Center Notes

We now have over 2500 items in our church Media Center. A church member stopped by last week and said, “This looks like a REAL library.” We try to be! God has blessed us indeed through book donations and through church funding.
Do you need information for a Bible study? Try our reference materials and commentaries. Do you need information about life issues? See our books on family relationships, single adult issues, senior adult issues, and grief issues.
Do you need a fiction book to help you unwind after a busy day—just stop by! Do the kids need reading material? Do you need a movie for family movie night? If we don’t have what you need, we’ll make every effort to find it for you. Come to see us real soon!

The Master’s Men
Sunday, March 4th at 10:20AM

The Master's Men is a male a cappella ensemble dedicated to providing inspirational music to the glory of God. Our goal is to spread the message of God's love in song, in ways that will enhance Christian church worship services and other programs. Arrangements include hymns, spirituals, gospel, and other musical styles in four, five, and six part harmony for unaccompanied male voices. All of our members have considerable experience singing in quartets and/or choruses and choirs. The group was originally founded by the late Mr. Rudy Partin, who was a skilled and experienced director and arranger. Currently, The Master's Men are blessed to be directed by Mr. Robert Cox, a talented choral director and Christian Music Minister, and by Mr. Larry Triplett, one of the group's founding members and also a gifted choral director and arranger.
