The Challenge of Summer!
by Charles Allard

Summer is a wonderful time of the year. I know of no one who does not enjoy a slower pace, relaxation, vacation time, picnics, swimming, boating and all of the other recreational opportunities that summer affords. Getting away from the routine of things can be refreshing and exhilarating. Even Jesus found it necessary to get away from the crowds and he encouraged his disciples to come apart for awhile before they fell apart. Everyone needs down time, time alone, time for rest, time for reflection and re-creation.

The Challenge for the Christian is to keep the proper balance of down time and Christian service in perspective. There is a growing trend in our fast paced world to close the church down during the summer, discontinue Wednesday night activities, cut back on worship attendance and take a break from spiritual things. Churches that have fallen into the pattern of “closing down” when they ought to be revving up have some sad stories to tell. There is a warning in scripture about giving the devil an opportunity.

As you plan your summer consider the challenge that the summer offers. Take time to ponder these questions:

•Will my physical downtime add to or take away from my spiritual growth?

•If I am absent from worship, Bible Study and Prayer Meeting for an extended period of time, what will that say about my relationship to God and how will it spiritually impact the lives of those who look to me as an example?

•Will I rob God in order to fulfill my pleasures?

•Will God be glorified by what I do this summer?

It is my prayer that you will not only find time for rest but that you will deepen your personal walk with God, strengthen your personal witness and enhance the ministry of Westwood in our community and world.

"A Christian Response to the DaVinci Code"

by Mike Eddinger

Dan Brown’s book is a hot topic and the subsequent movie has added fuel to the fire. What are the issues raised by The DaVinci Code and as Christians, how should we respond? Your friends are probably already talking about it. On Sunday afternoon, July 9 at 4:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, Mike will lead a discussion about the book and movie and reactions to them. Read the book and/or see the movie and come prepared to join in.

"How To Study A Biblical Passage"

Mike Eddinger

Familiarity with God’s word can become a
major barrier to truly hearing it fresh and anew. What we “know” about Scripture can sometimes stand in the way of our study of a particular passage. This two-session study will explore ways to approach a biblical text and allow it to “speak.” If you are a Sunday School teacher, bible study leader, or simply interested in “digging deeper” into the Bible, come join us for this practical, hands-on study.

DATES: July 30 and August 6
TIME: 4:00 until 5:30 p.m.
PLACE Fellowship Hall
TOPICS: “Writing Your Own Paraphrase”
“Translation Comparisons”
“Identifying Context”
“Using Outside Resources: Bible

Christmas in August for the Roman Gypsies

In April 2004, our church officially “Adopted or Partnered” with the Romany people group for a three year period. We are now in the third year of this partnership and would like to do something to help the children in this extremely poor group. The Mission Committee would like to ask the church to donate for the children any of the following items: winter hats, gloves, socks, hard candy (wrapped), tooth brushes, tooth paste or school supplies (pencils, crayons, markers, but please NO PAPER). These items will be shipped to our missionary contacts, Tammy and Ralph Stocks, in Hungary for distribution. Please put your contributions in the storage box in front of the Media Center by Sunday, Sept. 3.

Hurricane Katrina Mission Trip

A mission team from Westwood will be going to Gulfport, Mississippi June 10-17 to assist with disaster recovery work on homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

The team will leave on Saturday and return the following Saturday. Travel time is a long day (15-16 hours). Our church will provide transportation (rental van). Cost is $10.00 donation per day per person ($60.00) for meals and lodging while in Gulfport. NC Baptist Men will provide housing and meals. If you cannot go and would like to participate, you can make a contribution to the Westwood Mission Project fund and sponsor one or more persons.

NC Baptist Men have committed to rebuild 600 homes in the Gulfport area in the next two years. The type of reconstruction work will depend on the skills of the team. There is always something for everyone to do regardless of your skills. In fact no special skills are needed, just willing workers who want to show Christ’s love. This mission trip is an excellent opportunity for Westwood youth to participate since school will be out. Glenn and Ross Dion have already committed to go.

Norm Dion will be the team captain for this trip. Sign up sheets are posted in Hallway A and B. Contact Norm for more information about participating.

Seniors Ministry

We are planning to attend the musical presentation “Let Freedom Ring” at Johnston Community College on Saturday, June 17 at 2pm. We will meet at the church and carpool together. Following the show, we will eat together. A sign up sheet will be posted on the Senior bulletin board.

College & Career Sunday School Class

There will be a College and Career Sunday School class forming for young adults (ages 18 – 29) starting June 11. The class will meet downstairs in room 111. Please join us for coffee, fellowship, and Bible Study. If you have any questions, please contact Tim and Cindy Bolden at cindy.bolden@iglass.net.
