For The Love of Adventure

By Charles Allard

I am quite certain that I acquired my adventuresome spirit from my Grandfather Allard who left his beloved family in England as a young man of 20 years to come to America and to settle in Oklahoma before it became a State. Up until we returned from Brazil in 1982, I actually knew more about Brazil than I did my own homeland. Since that time, Gloria and I have made an effort to know more about the United States.

During the month of July, with the blessing of our Personnel Committee and hopefully our church family, Gloria and I will be visiting the Northern most States and the Midwest of this great country. Our travels will take us to areas we have never seen. We will visit Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, and a few other States that we have longed to visit all for the love of adventure.

In my entire ministry I have never been away from the church field longer than two weeks. We are deeply grateful for the freedom that has been granted us to take this extended time.

During my absence the church will be under the very capable leadership of Mike Eddinger, Caroline Allen and Michelle Anderson. Mike will be preaching all five Sundays of July. Our staff will provide ministry for you in the same way that you are now accustomed. In case of hospitalization, trauma, death or special need, you can count on them to do their very best to meet your needs. I encourage you to pray for our Staff as they lead you and to support them with your presence.

We look upon this trip as an opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of this great country, to spend quality time together, and to renew our physical and spiritual strength. We ask for your prayers for safety on the journey and for renewed vision of God’s plan and purpose in our lives and for Westwood. You can be certain that you will be in our thoughts and prayers and we will look forward to hearing of the good things that have happened at Westwood.

Prayer Room

In 1 Thessalonians 5:17 we find encouragement to “pray without ceasing.” In a world that is so loud and chaotic, quiet time with God often gets pushed to the side. If you are searching for a quiet place to spend time with God in prayer and meditation, we invite you to come and use the Prayer Room in Hall B. It is available Monday through Friday from 9:00am -4:00pm and on Wednesdays and Sundays, whenever the doors are open.

Baptist Men - Gulfport, Mississippi Mission Trip

The last opportunity to participate in Hurricane Katrina disaster recovery will be November 10-17, 2007. This will be the final mission trip for Westwood to Gulfport, Mississippi. NC Baptist Men made a two-year commitment to the Gulfport area and that commitment will be completed at the end of this year. The current plans are to close the NC Baptist Men operation in Gulfport at that time and begin moving equipment such as shower units, etc. back to North Carolina. Our commitment was to rebuild 700 homes in the Gulfport area, and about 550 houses have already been completed. Those who have been to Gulfport will tell you that the needs are beyond one’s imagination. This is a great opportunity to help people who are in desperate need and to share Christ’s love. No special skills are required; just a commitment to help someone in need. This will be Westwood’s seventh trip to Gulfport. If you are interested, contact Norm Dion (467-0881) or Jim Canterberry (467-3126) for more information about participating.

Hopebuilders, Grifton, NC

A team from our church went to Grifton, NC on Saturday, June 9, to participate in Hope Builders. This program is designed to replace substandard housing in the Pitt County area. The team consisted of Horace Robertson, Jackie Woodcock, Jim and Renee Bridges. The team joined with a team of 11 from Temple Baptist Church in Fayetteville along with Baptist Men’s Coordinator, Billy Tarlton. The team worked installing the joists in a new home being built for Mrs. Fleming who is 88 years old and had lived in her old home for the past 47 years until it was taken down to make way for the new home. Her husband is deceased. Also helping that day were two daughters and one son of Mrs. Fleming.
According to Horace, the team all agreed that it was a blessing to know that they had the opportunity to contribute to building the home for Mrs. Fleming while enduring the mid 90 degree temperature.

Christmas in August for the Romany Gypsies

Again this year we will be sending gifts to the Romany Gypsy children through our church wide Christmas in August project. The Mission Committee would like to ask church members to donate any of the following items: winter hats, gloves, socks, hard candy (individually wrapped), toothbrushes, toothpaste or school supplies (pencils, crayons, markers, but please NO PAPER). These items will be shipped to our missionary contacts Tammy and Ralph Stocks in Hungary for distribution.

ESL Spring Semester Update

January 16 - May 8, 2007

Tuesday nights at Westwood bustled with activity for everyone involved in the ESL Ministry. Our teachers and childcare providers welcomed a large number of enthusiastic returning students as well as many slightly reserved first-time students and children. After only a few classes, the distinction between returning student and first-time student was less obvious. As the stress of learning a new language diminished, the students eagerly practiced their new listening and speaking skills with their teachers and classmates.

As word of Westwood’s ESL Ministry spread, our enrollment continued to grow. This semester, a total of 158 people participated in the program. This number included 79 adult students, 42 children, 21 teachers, and 16 childcare providers. Attendance remained high, with an average weekly attendance of 70. The students hailed from the following 20 countries: Afghanistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Latvia, India, Iran, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and Vietnam. While the students brought with them a broad diversity in interest, education, and culture, they were totally united in their desire to speak English and become contributing members of the local community.

Recognition night (final class) proved to be rewarding for students and teachers. This was a time in which all students demonstrated their newly-acquired language skills through drama, music, collage, and personal letters. This time also allowed our teachers an opportunity to reflect on their contributions to student achievement. Thirty-four students, who attended 50% or more classes, received certificates of achievement, and one student received a perfect attendance certificate. After the “formalities” of the evening, friends and family members joined us in sharing an international meal that included quite an array of exotic food, which was prepared by students and faculty.

As always, the students were exceedingly grateful to Westwood Baptist Church for providing facilities for ESL classes. One student aptly expressed his feelings on his evaluation form when he wrote, “God bless you all and thank you for give [sic] us part of you [sic] life teaching us your language. Also, thank you so much for take [sic] care of our children.” Expressions of this nature, plus a sense of call to the ministry, continually encouraged Westwood’s ESL faculty to keep students busy and class time lively.

Royal Ambassadors

This past Memorial Day weekend some of the Royal Ambassador boys helped to commemorate Memorial Day in a special way.

On Sunday afternoon, May 27, the boys assisted the American Legion Post 67 and Auxiliary with placing flags on the gravesites of veterans at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cary. The boys were invited to participate in this event by our own members, Curtis and Sybil Leary, who are members of the American Legion Post 67. The boys were able to help identify the headstones of more than 100 veterans and to set the flags in place before them.

Both before and after completing their task, the boys were taught the reasons we honor our veterans with the placing of flags. The boys were very attentive and respectful throughout the afternoon, working alongside veterans, RA leaders and family members.

The RA boys in attendance were J.C. and T.C. Cunningham, Christopher Persinger, Seph Hefelfinger, Jacob Cottingham and Harrison Duncan. Also helping were siblings Morgan Persinger and Eric Cottingham, as well as parents Tim and Mary Cunningham, Scott Hefelfinger, Steve and Beverly Persinger, Ginger Duncan, Rebeca Cottingham and RA leader Tony Edwards.

The Westwood Baptist Church RA’s held their Annual Ice Cream Social Fundraiser recently. All profits go towards Camp Angel Tree. Since 1982, Angel Tree has partnered with churches and volunteers around the country to minister to the children of prisoners and their families. The money collected by the RA’s will pay to send a boy from such a family to Camp Caraway and hopefully lead him to the right path. This year, the Westwood RA’s were able to contribute their largest donation ever – over $200. A big “Thank You” to everyone that enjoyed the ice cream.

The awards ceremony prior to the ice cream social honored the boys, their leaders, and the hard work performed by all. The RA program will resume in the Fall of 2007 with literally dozens of fun activities
planned, such as the annual campout at Umstead Park, mission projects that help not only the needy but also to serve to bond the boys as a group, RA basketball, and the ever popular RA / GA Pinewood Derby. While the RA program will miss those boys that will be moving into the Youth program, we look forward to the new boys that will be moving into the RA program.

If you have a boy in elementary school that would like to join the fun, please contact Tony Edwards, Tim Cunningham, or any of the RA leaders. We also invite anyone in the church to help out with the RA’s as a leader or leader assistant. Nothing keeps you young like teaching and guiding young boys.
