Westwood Baptist Church Newsletter

| We Are A Global
Impact Church The Baptist World Alliance, of which we are a member, has named us as a Global Impact Church. That distinction comes because we contribute $1000 yearly to the world wide ministry of the BWA. But long before the BWA gave us that title, we were already a Global Impact Church. Our vision is for a world that needs the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Whether we are ministering at an Assisted Living Home, cutting someone’s grass, repairing a home, visiting the sick, participating in disaster relief in Grifton, NC or Gulfport, Mississippi, or World Changers in Philadelphia, we are on mission for Christ. Our budget categorizes our mission heart. It is a statement of who we are and what we believe about spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a needy world. Perhaps it would be more accurate if we deleted the word “budget” and renamed it Westwood Ministries. We do not support a budget but rather the ministries that our budget represents. If you need a jump start on prayer, take the Westwood Ministries to which we give financial support and pray regularly for every ministry represented on that document. Our ministries are church approved. We are organized and deliberate in our commitments. We are prayerful in our choices of ministry. For that reason we have no reluctance to ask members who are affiliated with Westwood to be good stewards of their income and to honor God, through his church, with their tithes and offerings. As God has blessed you, will you accept the challenge to honor him with the “FIRST FRUITS” of your income and life? Will you commit to increasing the percentage of your giving so that we can be more effective in our ministries and more faithfully join God in the work that He is doing? |

Drama Team We are the Westwood Drama Team, and we’re looking for your gifts, talents, and support! If you’ve ever wanted to be a part of the dramatic readings and presentations that you sometimes see during a worship service, come be a part. Or maybe you want to help out “behind the scenes” with props, set design, or by creating beautiful costumes – we can use your help there, too! Think you might like to learn some Sign Language and perform to music? Come give it a try! If your time is limited and you can’t make a “permanent” commitment, that’s OK! You can volunteer to help out with a single project, one that fits in with your schedule, and then step back until another opportunity comes along that sparks your interest. We’re flexible! We’ve got lots of ideas – but we need your help to bring them to life as a vital and dynamic part of our worship experience. Currently we’re looking for men and women, boys and girls, folks of all ages, to come together and make this a truly wonderful part of our service. We meet most Sundays at 4:30 p.m. Check the schedule of events on your bulletin for info about Drama Team or contact Caroline Allen or Ken Wilson. |

Prayer Room
In 1 Thessalonians 5:17 we find encouragement to “pray without ceasing.” In a world that is so loud and chaotic, quiet time with God often gets pushed to the side. If you are searching for a quiet place to spend time with God in prayer and meditation, we invite you to come and use the Prayer Room in Hall B. It is available Monday through Friday from 9:00am - 4:00pm and on Wednesdays and Sundays, whenever the doors are open.

| Mission Display Cases In our mission display cases
we have items from Brazil, Spain, Africa and Peru provided by Charles

It’s hard to know how to help someone who is going through a divorce. It takes a long time and a lot of work to heal the pain that comes with the breakup of a marriage.

| RA News The Westwood BC RA’s spent the weekend of Oct 27 – 29 camping at Crabtree Camp in Umstead Park. While we got a little wet unpacking Friday evening, the overall weather was excellent. After unloading our gear, some of the adults prepared a wonderful meal of hot dogs and beans while the remainder of the grownups conducted several informative camp craft classes for the RAs. The camp craft classes included map reading, first aid and knife safety. Always remember the most important knife safety rule: If you don’t cut towards yourself you will never cut yourself. Since it rained all evening, we let the boys enjoy board games and indoor activities after dinner. Just before bedtime, Tony Edwards led a timely devotion detailing the events of Noah’s Ark. Saturday morning, we awoke to a beautiful fall day with mild temperatures and a bright sky. It was perfect for hiking, so we took 3. Before setting off into the woods, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast of sausage, bacon, eggs, grits and hot-chocolate. We enjoyed a quick warm-up hike before returning to camp to hear a park ranger tell us all about the wildlife in Umstead Park. We learned the answer to the most anticipated common question:“Are there any bears in Umstead Park?” The answer is NO. A black bear requires 15 to 20 square miles of habitat and Umstead has less than 10. Armed with this knowledge, we decided to tackle an off-trail hike to find the mysterious and abandoned Sycamore Camp. The ranger had told us about where this ancient camp and a general direction to head. We tried hard, but we were not able to find Sycamore Camp before it was time to head back to camp for lunch. Maybe next time. During the afternoon, the older boys (including adults) played a wide-open game of kickball. The final score was 100 to 100. The younger boys stayed closer to camp and enjoyed the outdoors. The evening’s meal of foil dinners was as much fun to make as it was to eat. We topped off the evening with smores followed by an excellent participation devotion from Steve Persinger on the topic of placing your faith in the Lord no matter how hard the task in front of you. Before turning in, Luther Davis lead the older RA’s on a night hike to the edge of the airport property where we witnessed many planes landing and taking off. Sunday morning’s breakfast of pancakes, bacon, sausage and hot chocolate was enjoyed by everyone. After breakfast, Bob Brown led a devotion on God’s creations and his rules. Robbie Brown then lead the RA’s on a camp wide scavenger hunt while the adults broke camp and cleaned up. A wonderful trip was had by all. The RA’s were Alex Brown, TC Cunningham, JC Cunningham, Harrison Duncan, Seph Hefelfinger, Zack Hill, Chris Koogler, Edward Mendosa, Nolan Lory, Christopher Persinger, and Eli White. Robbie Brown
from the youth was appreciated by all and helpful to everyone while
Paul Davis represented the future RA's. The adults that had the pleasure
of camping with the RA’s were Bob Brown, Luther Davis and his
adult son Brian, Darryl Duncan, Tony Edwards and his adult son Greg,
Glen Hill, Scott Hefelfinger, Andy Lory, Steve Persinger, and Jim
White. |
